Our computer is connected to a shared printer.Unfortunately, we are having an issue of the connection. The error message which pops-up when we try to print is “The printer cannot be contacted over the network”.
We have tried several troubleshooting steps to address this issue. At first, we make sure that the printer is properly connected to our network and it is able to communicate with the other devices. To ensure this, we checked if the printer’s IP address is correct and it is in the same network as our computer. We also verified that the printer is not having any connectivity issues.
Next, we rebooted the printer, router, and our computer to refresh the settings. We also verified that the printer is assigned the correct driver for printing. Thereafter, we also checked that the printer is not turned off or in sleep mode.
After this, we used a direct Ethernet connection to the printer to see if the issue can be resolved. Furthermore, we went in to the printer’s network settings and ensured that the printer is in a state of accepting incoming connections and that it has permission to establish connections to other devices.
Despite of executing all these steps, we were still not able to resolve the issue. After a couple of hours, we found out the issue. It turns out that the computer and the printer were in different subnets. As a result, we had to modify the subnet masks of both devices to ensure that they are in the same subnet.
After updating the settings, we were finally able to connect the printer to our computer without any issues.
We learned that we should always double-check our network configuration to ensure that all the devices are in the same subnet. This is a very important step when connecting a device over the network. A minor misconfiguration can cause significant connection issues. Understanding these network basics can help us a lot in the future.
